A Purpose-Built Racing and Training Precinct

The WTR Greenfield Project is a long-term initiative led by Waikato Thoroughbred Racing to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for thoroughbred racing and training in the Waikato. The project proposes the development of a modern, fit-for-purpose racing and training facility in the central Waikato that will centralise operations, support industry participants, attract and retain trainers, and deliver high-quality infrastructure for generations to come.

It will include a racecourse and training tracks supported by modern racing infrastructure such as training barns and tie-ups, a function and events centre for racing and community use, and complementary activities including a village hub and service centre, café, veterinary clinic.

The project follows the 2023 merger of the Waikato Racing Club, Cambridge Jockey Club, and Waipa Racing Club, bringing the region’s racing industry together under a single, unified vision. Extensive feasibility work, independent assessments, and ongoing member and stakeholder engagement have informed the pathway toward a Greenfield solution that meets the long-term needs of both the sport and the wider community.

The proposed facility has been designed with a whole-of-site, future-focused approach. It will include a racecourse and training tracks supported by modern racing infrastructure such as training barns and tie-ups, a function and events centre for racing and community use, and complementary activities including a village hub and service centre, café, veterinary clinic, comprehensive residential development for senior living, and residential lifestyle sections. The racecourse design incorporates modern ecological standards, including integrated stormwater systems, improved land stability, enhanced water management, and opportunities to strengthen local biodiversity.

If the project proceeds, it would replace the existing Te Rapa Racecourse, Cambridge Racecourse, and Waipā Racecourse with a single, state-of-the-art facility. This consolidation would reduce duplication of ageing infrastructure, enable more efficient use of urban land, and create a long-term regional asset that supports tourism, events, employment, and economic activity. Importantly, it also presents opportunities for new community amenities on site and future housing development on land no longer required for racing.

This proposal represents an exciting opportunity for the Waikato to invest in infrastructure that benefits both the racing industry and the broader community. The aim is to deliver a facility the region can be proud of — one that meets modern standards, reflects community expectations, and supports a vibrant and sustainable future for Waikato racing.
